1. In a little house covered in snow lived 3 boys. Frerddy and Bobby were 7 year old twins. Phillip was 10. One early morning they came clattering downstairs shouting "Daddy! Daddy!" Freddy and Bobby both took his boots while Phillip, or Phil as they call him, took their father's cots, hat, gloves, and scarf. "Where are our presents? What did you bring us this time? Candy? Money? What did you bring?" Their father's eyes were twinkling while he checked his pockets. "Let's see boys, is there anything in this pocket? Or maybe this one?" Each time the boys shouted no they got more and more excited. "Let's see if I left it in the stable, shall we?" The boys ran ahead and then jumped up and down while they waited for their father to open the stable doors. When they got in they stopped dead, for there in the stable were 2 new horses! "Oh Dad, are they ours? Really ours?" "Yes, they're ours, really ours. I got a bit of luck today. The carpenter's shop was understaffed so I helped out there. Apparently, I did such good work that the master carpenter offered to hire me. Do you boys know what that means?" "What Daddy, what?" "We're going to town!"
The next few days were a flurry of excitement. The whole house had to be packed up, the animals moved, and as many crops as possible gathered. They all worked very hard from sunrise till sunset. Freddy and Bobby packed up all the food in boxes and then Phil carried them to the wagon. Father carried the furniture out to the wagon and began loading everything inside. Finally, everything was packed and they were on their way. The twins were excited because this was their first trip to town. Phil had been there once before but he remembered all the wonders he'd seen and couldn't wait to see them again. That had been while the twins were only 4 and Mother had still been here to watch them. He thought about his mother.
She was very dim in Phil's memory and the twins didn't remember her at all. All Phil could remember was a woman with long brown hair, a gentle smile, a warm laugh, a soft voice, and the song she sung every night before Phil went to bed. Father, however could remember much more. He remembered courting her, slowly winning her heart. Then the long struggle to convince her parents he was true. He remembered how beautiful she'd been on their wedding day. She'd only been wearing her Sunday dress, but he'd thought she was the most beautiful woman in the world. He remembered walking into their bedroom, seeing her tired, yet proud, holding the newborn Phil in her arms. Then those next 3 years, learning how to be parents, quarreling about how to raise Phil, but always making up before bed. Then he remembered her long illness after giving birth to Freddy and Bobby. Those long nights, sitting up as she gasped for breath, burning from fever, and then finally that night of calm when the fever finally broke.
"Daddy, Daddy! We're here! We're finally in town! Oh, it's so amazing! Look at all the buildings and people! I never knew that there were this many people in the whole world!" Father smiled, watching Freddy and Bobby tumble over each other like puppies, garbling their words, interrupting each other and trying to see everything at once. "Daddy, what's that building? How many people are here? Are we really going to live here?" Phil was only 10, but he already wanted to know everything he could. Finally they pulled up in front of the carpenter's shop. "And this is where I'm going to work now." The boys went in and gasped when they saw the inside. Men were working everywhere making chairs, tables, beds, and other things that numbered more than they could count. There was a huge machine that cut huge logs in half and beyond that men were cutting them in pieces small enough to work with. Down below all theis apprentices were learning how to make different things and the very newest onces were sitting and making buttons. On the very top floors were the masters who made beautiful and intricate carvings and statues that the rich could buy to decorate their homes with.
